What to know about Ammonia Cracker Units for Gas formations?

Cracked ammonia is widely used in the steel industry for heat treatment processes which are found as a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen where nitrogen gas is hidden. The demand for ammonia has increased as the requirement for it has increased. We will now talk about the use of ammonia cracker units for gas generation and other uses in the blog below.

What are Ammonia crackers?

NH3 cracker or an Ammonia cracker is used for producing gas which are hydrogen and nitrogen gas. Their generation takes place in a very effective way in the ratio of 3:1 in volume and 14:3 in weight ratio.

The absorber in the unit cleans the gas from moisture and ammonia and Nitrogen can be separated from the forming gas with the usage of PSA nitrogen gas generator which only requires pure nitrogen gas.

The cracking of ammonia is an endothermic reaction which needs heat for the process to take place. Source of heat could generally vary from a gas fired furnace to an electrically heated furnace. Ammonia cracking catalyst is held into a retort made of alloy which is heat resisting in nature.

The cracked ammonia cools down to room temperature in a tube-shaped heat exchanger which has a -30 degree Celsius. The gas that is left behind moves through a sieve, molecular in size which is filled with gas purifier to achieve dew point up to -80 degree celcuis.

What are the features of the Ammonia cracker unit?

  • Their furnace skin temperature is 20 degree celsius.

  • The dew point reaches up to -80 degree celcius.

  • They can be used for heavy duty operations for a longer period of time.

  • The machines are automatic and need no further assistance.

  • The unit has negligible maintenance and a long service period.

  • Ammonia crackers have a high turndown ratio.

What are the applications of the Cracker unit?

  • Cracker unit is used for heat treatment furnace for bright annealing.

  • It is used in Stainless steel industry as well

  • Ammonia cracker units are also used in the brazing industry and as gas purification systems as well.
